Blue Lake?

July 1, 2003
Omar Bose led this outing, promising a visit to beautiful Blue Lake.  But on Friday evening he found an announcement on the Gifford Pinchot trails condition webpage that the trail was closed due to snow.  But it was dated June 8th! Attempts to recruit someone to scout it with him on the weekend failed, so he resorted to phoning the forest service offices on Monday morning.

They told him the trail was now open, but might have patches of snow. They forgot to tell him that all the rest of the snow had been converted to water and mud.  So that's what we found. Water and mud. And mosquitoes. We finally found a log to sit on for lunch (the ground everywhere was soggy), and the concensus was that we had been through enough water and mud!  Blue Lake could wait until autumn!

Omar had determined that the Pacific Crest Trail from Crest Horse Camp south would be a good hike to substitute if the original trail was not available.  It would have been a better choice!  The redeeming feature of this trip was the good nature of the hikers themselves.  They were determined to enjoy the day no matter what.
